For those who love beads, jewelry, yarn and the like, D&I beads is a dream come true.

The bead store, owned and run by the Brown family in Peoria, boasts more than 10,000 square feet of beads of different shapes, sizes and colors.

Paula Brown and her father, Robert Brown, started the business in 2001, after years of making jewelry and participating in various craft shows together.

That's where the name of the store, which stands for "Dad and I beads" came from, Paula said.

Paula's mother, Rose, and sister, Michelle, also are involved in the daily grind of running the store, which carries tools to make crafts, beading books, sterling silver products, watches, natural stones, knitting supplies, ribbons and yarn.

"We also offer various craft classes, from beading for beginners to wire wrapping, watch and bracelet making and crocheting," Paula said.

Classes cost about $10 and participants can bring in their own supplies or purchase them at the store.

Paula has a few shopping tips for people interested in getting involved in a craft project.

"If you're looking for a specific item to use for your project, bring in a picture of it or bring in a pattern you have in mind so that we can consult with you, and match it to what we have in the store," she said.

Their store is able to stand up to larger chains of craft stores because it specializes in beads and carries a larger selection at lower prices, Paula said.

"It's harder for them to help their customers find exactly what they need," Paula said, referring to the chains.

The store advertises and ships around the world. "Bead people will drive anywhere for beads," she said.
